What is the Grant?

The ACUTA-MICTA Technology Research Grant is a grant awarded for a technology research project in the area of higher education IT and telecommunications. The project may be broad in size and scope, and the grant will enable the non-profit institution to fulfill its endeavors to provide a foundation for a stellar learning environment. The grant recipient, a member of both MiCTA and ACUTA, will be announced at the ACUTA Annual Conference, and will be expected to publicize and share the project results through both ACUTA and MiCTA.

Any non-profit organization that it is a member of both MiCTA and ACUTA may apply for grant consideration.

How are winners selected?

Winners are selected by the ACUTA awards committee on the basis of the technology research project's contribution to and support of the mission of their organization. Applications are evaluated on the basis of: scope and complexity of the endeavor, technological leadership, benefit to the institution and key constituents, and demonstration of excellence and professionalism. The research project should be innovative and exemplary, and provide significant advantage to the institution, faculty, staff, and/or students.

Evaluation Criteria

I. Description of Project 
Describe the project - what will be done, where, when, by whom, and for what purpose. Identify key goals and objectives. Explain aspects of the research project that make it unique and worthy of financial support: Will it promote community outreach? Will a unique partnership be formed? What are the key benefits to the institution, its environment, or well-being of its constituents?

II. Planning, Leadership, and Management Support 
Describe the scope, complexity, and nature of the planning process required for approval and implementation of the research project. How does the effort integrate with the institution's vision, long range plans, and/or business plans? What are examples of the level of commitment and involvement by senior management? Describe the planning tools for decision making, control, and assessment of the project.

III. Promotion of Technology
How will this project integrate with other services and plans? What approaches will be used to introduce and promote this project to management and various user personnel? When will the endeavor be initiated? Is the approach original, or is an existing approach being tailored to fit the organization's needs? How extensive will the effort be within the institution? How will the projects outcomes be disseminated?

IV. Quality and Performance Measures & Funding Issues
What types of quality, performance/productivity measures will be used? What, specifically, will be measured? What categories of information will be collected? If the grant does not fully fund the project, will the initiative still proceed? Will other methods/sources of supportive funding be sought out and what would those sources be?

V. Customer Satisfaction and Anticipated Results/Outcomes 
Describe key user involvement with the planning and implementation of the technology research project. What is the anticipated reaction of various users to the project? What types of evaluation instruments will be used to assess user satisfaction? How might the grant and its outcomes benefit other higher education institutions?

VI. Projected Budget
Prepare a one-page cumulative budget for the full duration of the project. The budget need not be detailed but should be sufficient for the committee to understand the intended scale of the proposed project and if partial funding would still be beneficial.

  • Morgan State University - For its ‘Record and Go’ Studio – a simplified and automated video recording studio where students, faculty, and staff can record videos for a myriad of purposes.
  • Texas A&M University - To fund a student team working in its Fixed Mobile Convergence (FMC) test lab.
